Travis Leslie may need high flying theatrics to lift Georgia into the Big Dance |
NCAA Conference Tournaments have not only started, but some have finished already. That being said, most of the big ones will be kicking off Wednesday. The most notable will be the Big East Tournament starting its 5-day extravaganza tomorrow afternoon. Let's take a look at the conference tournaments, and break down a few key elements in each one. Each conference title is a link that directs to the tournament bracket.
Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament
March 10-13, 2011
Greensboro, NC
Locks: Duke, North Carolina and Florida State
Bubble Teams: Clemson, Virginia Tech and Boston College
- The ACC has had a bit of a down year this season, but at the same time saw a refreshing revitalization of the Duke-North Carolina rivalry after a late season run by the Tar Heels. Out of the 12 ACC teams, only 6 of them have NCAA Tournament aspirations, and only 3 of those teams are current locks for the NCAA Tournament. North Carolina is one of the teams considered locks, and while being the 1-seed for the conference tournament, is still flying a bit under the radar as of late. The Tar Heels are young and inexperienced, so if they can show people that they can win consistently - they may sniff the 2-seed or 1-seed line this season's NCAA Tournament. Duke is the 2-seed after their late season loss to the Heels, but still should be considered favorites to win the tournament in Greensboro after dominance over competition most of the season. With that being said, Duke has stumbled a bit as of late and needs to make sure they don't fall backwards into the NCAA Tournament. Florida State could benefit from a good ACC Tournament run, but their week is not nearly as important as the week is to Boston College, Clemson and Virginia Tech. A potential second round match up between Boston College and Clemson could potentially be an elimination game. Clemson does get a bye, so Boston College must first beat lowly Wake Forest to even reach the second round. The Eagles have a top 50 RPI and strength of schedule, but don't have many good victories to pad their resume. Boston College hasn't faltered down the stretch, in fact they've won three in a row, but they have certainly not done anything to improve their resume enough to feel safe about Selection Sunday. A good run in Greensboro won't be very impressive, but it should be enough to put Boston College back into the NCAA Tournament. Clemson on the other hand has used a late season surge to put themselves into serious NCAA Tournament discussion. Much like Boston College, the Tigers don't have a very impressive resume, but have a few more quality wins which puts them in better shape. Even with three losses to teams ranked worse than 100 in the RPI, Clemson should find themselves in the NCAA Tournament if they can grab one or two wins in the ACC Tournament. Virginia Tech, only weeks after their upset win over then #1 Duke, has found themselves back on the NCAA Tournament bubble again. One win should be enough for the Hokies, but a second round match up with Florida State would provide more than enough cushion to make the field of 68 if they could pull out the victory.
Dark Horse: #3 - Florida State
Potential Spoiler: #8 - Virginia/#9 - Miami (FL)

Atlantic Ten Conference Tournament
March 8-13, 2011
Atlantic, NJ
Locks: Xavier and Temple
Bubble Teams: Richmond
- They're back yet again! The Xavier Musketeers always are around this time of year, and once again they enter the Atlantic Ten Tournament as the favorites to walk away champions once again. They have lost only twice in the year 2011, and tore through the Atlantic Ten conference schedule with a 15-1 record. Xavier is more than safe, but they can do a little seed-padding if they walk away winners. A 3-seed or 4-seed is in their sights if they can roll through Atlantic City this week. While Xavier might be the favorites, the Temple Owls are looking to win their fourth straight Atlantic Ten Tournament and avoid hovering into the 8-seed or 9-seed range. Right now Temple is about a 7-seed, and a few wins could help them avoid those two deadly seed lines. Head Coach Fran Dunphy would love to win the Atlantic Ten Tournament, but I am also sure he would like to finally break through and win his first NCAA Tournament game. Look for Temple, at the very least, try and carry some momentum into the big dance next week. This season has been an up and down one for the Richmond Spiders, one week they are upsetting Purdue, and the next week they are losing to bottom-feeders Georgia Tech. Justin Harper and Kevin Anderson is one of the best one-two punches in all of NCAA Basketball, but unfortunately Richmond has a few tough sore spots on their resume. With that being said, Richmond should be in as of right now and really only needs one win, or two wins at the most to feel good about themselves come Selection Sunday. That is easier said than done however with their second round match up being against pesky Rhode Island or St. Louis. Duquesne entered February undefeated in the Atlantic Ten, but finished the regular season on a 3-6 downward spiral. The Dukes are probably out of range for an at-large berth, but if they can make the Atlantic Ten Tournament finals, they might get a few looks from the selection committee. That being said, Duquesne is led by experienced senior Bill Clark and a plethora of 3-point specialists and might be able to make a surprise run through the tournament and potentially lock up an automatic-bid into the NCAA Tournament.

Potential Spoiler: #6 - Rhode Island

Big XII Conference Tournament
March 9-12, 2011
Kansas City, MO
Locks: Kansas, Texas, Kansas State, Texas A&M and Missouri
Bubble Teams: Colorado, Nebraska and Baylor
- The 2011 Big XII Tournament has a few intriguing story lines, but their three definitive bubble teams will be the teams to watch in Kansas City. Kansas and Texas have only one thing in mind, and that is trying to lock up a #1 seed. The Jayhawks have a firm grasp on a #1 seed and as long as they win a game or two and Texas does not win the Big XII Tournament, then Kansas should be in the clear. Texas might have a little more to gain with their home state hosting not the only the Final Four, but also a regional in San Antonio. If Texas can win the Big XII Tournament then they should themselves with potential Sweet 16 and Elite 8 games nearby in San Antonio. Texas A&M, Kansas State and Missouri are safe bets for the NCAA Tournament, so their week will consist of winning games and jockeying for seeds in the 4-seed and 6-seed range come Selection Sunday. Kansas State is most likely the most interesting team of the week in Kansas City due to their recent resurgence. Jacob Pullen has been playing great in the last month and might have what it takes to carry the Wildcats on an upset ride through the tournament. That leaves us with the three Big XII teams trying to make their way into the NCAA Tournament: Colorado, Nebraska and Baylor. Colorado is the the team in the best shape out of the three, and has some good news and bad news entering Wednesday. The Buffaloes will take on the worst team in the Big XII, Iowa State, in their first round match up. While that might sound like a good thing, it is for sure no easy task as Colorado took a big NCAA Tournament bid hit only one week ago when it lost to that same Iowa State team. A win over the Cyclones won't do too much for Colorado's resume, but a win in the second round over Kansas State should be enough to launch the Buffaloes into the NCAA Tournament. Nebraska and Baylor are a few steps behind Colorado, but two wins in the Big XII Tournament should also be a goal they look for. If Nebraska can beat a mediocre Oklahoma State team, and then a Kansas team that they've hung with twice already this season, then the Cornhuskers would finish with at least 21 victories and should find themselves in the NCAA Tournament. On the other hand, Baylor's potential second round rematch against Texas could be a key game for the Bears on their road to being on the right side of the bubble. Many people consider Baylor farther off the NCAA Tournament tracks, so it may take them more than two wins to find themselves in. Bottom line for all three teams is that they need to not only win on Wednesday, but they also must find a way to pull another victory in potential second round games on Thursday.

Big East Conference Tournament
March 8-12, 2011
New York City, NY
Locks: Pittsburgh, Connecticut, Notre Dame, Georgetown, Villanova, Syracuse, St. John's,
Cincinnati, West Virginia and Louisville
Bubble Teams: Marquette
- Well, the Big East Tournament has quickly turned into the "Can the Big East get 11-bids" show this year. Another way to look at it is the "Marquette Tournament" because of the fact Marquette is in all reality the only bubble team in the Big East right now. With a solid resume Marquette may not even really be a true bubble seed. Most see them in the 10-seed and 11-seed range, which, if you're new to bracketology, means that Marquette really isn't in too much trouble of missing the NCAA Tournament. That can all change tonight if the Golden Eagles fall to the Providence Friars. A win over Providence, despite not being a solid resume booster, would more than likely be enough to launch the Marquette into the NCAA Tournament. However, a loss might cripple their chances, and it would should have Marquette standing on thin ice all the way up until Selection Sunday. Beating Providence will not be as easy for Marquette as some think it appears to be. The Friars are rather pesky and have a weapon in guard Marshon Brooks who is averaging just under 25 points per game. Another lowly team with a chance to make some noise is the Seton Hall Pirates with their star player Jeremy Hazell. The Pirates have knocked off Syracuse, St. John's and Marquette in the last two months, and has been competitive in nearly all of the 18 Big East games they played this season. A first round match up this afternoon against Rutgers sets up a road through New York against New York teams in St. John's and Syracuse for Seton Hall. While thinking that far ahead is a bit much, certainly don't sleep on a dangerous Seton Hall squad that can score boat loads of points. Rutgers meanwhile has only won five Big East games all season, but they have battle close in nearly all of their games this season. Mike Rice has done a fine job in his first year as head coach and has made Rugers competitive, don't be surprised of the Scarlett Knights spoil a few parties this week in New York.Out of the locks, Notre Dame and St. John's carry the most interesting story lines this week. If Notre Dame can make a run in Madison Square Garden and win two games, or the entire tournament then the Fighting Irish should be in line for a 1-seed come Selection Sunday. St. John's meanwhile will have all of the love from their home crowd at the Garden, and the Johnnies will look to make their first deep run in the Big East Tournament in a few years. Steve Lavin has done an unbelievable job with the Johnnies in his first season as head coach, but now Lavin can make even bigger strides if he can lead them at home and improve their already impressive NCAA Tournament resume. Still, the most intriguing reason to watch the Big East Tournament (if not the fact it is always exciting) is Marquette. If they can win tonight, Marquette might be able to lock-up an unthinkable 11 NCAA Tournament bids for the Big East.

Big Ten Conference Tournament
March 10-13, 2011
Indianapolis, IN
Locks: Ohio State, Purdue, Wisconsin
Near Locks: Illinois
Bubble Teams: Michigan State, Michigan, Penn State
- The conference with the team considered the best in the nation, Ohio State, will be focused on bubble teams in their tournament starting on Thursday. The Penn State Nittany Lions got into the tournament discussion with an outstanding strength of schedule, a good RPI and wins over Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan State and Minnesota. That being said, a loss to Maine and multiple blown games out of conference have handcuffed Penn State from being taken seriously late in the season. If Penn State wants to go to the NCAA Tournament, like Minnesota, they will need to reach to the Big Ten Tournament finals. Out of the four bubble teams, the two teams from the "Great Lakes State" are the ones to keep your eyes on in Indianapolis. Michigan State has been on a roller coaster ride all season long and it does not appear to be ending any time soon. The Spartans have lost to nine teams in the Top 40 RPI, which is good but it losing games doesn't help their resume that much. Right now Tom Izzo's squad should be safe for the NCAA Tournament, but that is assuming they knock off Iowa in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday. It would seem to be an easy task, but Iowa has already knocked off Michigan State once this season. The Spartans won't need to make a long run in Indianapolis, but a first round knockout could potentially keep this Final Four regular out of the NCAA Tournament. Michigan finished the season 6-3, after a miserable January in which they went the opposite with a 3-6 record, to put themselves in the thick of the NCAA Tournament discussion. Michigan is safe as of right now, and with a bye in the Big Ten Tournament will most likely only need to win their first game against Illinois to set themselves up nicely for Selection Sunday. Jon Belien's squad is one of the youngest teams in the country, and posses some of the best 3-point shooting weapons as well. Michigan will give headaches for teams not only in the Big Ten Tournament, but for teams in the NCAA Tournament if they get there. Illinois should be safe even with a loss in their first game to Michigan, but Bruce Webber's squad won't want to risk anything after being snubbed last season by the selection committee. Top teams Ohio State and Purdue will use the tournament to try and position themselves for a 1-seed, but out of the two teams Purdue will most likely need to work the hardest to do so. The Boilermakers were in line for a 1-seed until they got beat by lowly Iowa, so a winning the Big Ten Tournament would be a huge boost in their chances at getting that seed.

Conference-USA Tournament
March 9-12, 2011
El Paso, TX
Bubble Teams: Alabama-Birmingham, Memphis, Texas-El Paso
- Conference USA appears to be a one-bid league this season with no one sticking out enough to be a sure-fire bubble team. Only Alabama-Birmingham could be considered on the bubble, but a loss in anything but the Conference USA Championship game might be enough to keep them out of the NCAA Tournament. The Blazers are the favorites to win the Conference USA Tournament and, with the exception of two losses to Memphis, have really dominated the conference this year. Led by former Indiana head coach Mike Davis and star forward Cam Moore, the Blazers will be a dangerous team to play as anywhere from a 7-seed to a 11-seed in the NCAA Tournament. Memphis continues to fail to reach the same territory they were in in the John Calipari era in terms of success, but this week could go a long way in gaining a lot of that back. At times the Tigers can look outstanding (against Gonzaga and UAB) and other times the Tigers play down to much weaker competition (Rice, SMU and East Carolina). Those two wins over conference tournament favorites UAB should give Memphis the confidence to make a run in the tournament and lock up an automatic bid into the tournament. With the tournament being in rowdy El Paso, Texas-El Paso has quietly crept into NCAA Tournament talk as a potential bid-thief. Don't expect Texas-El Paso to make noise for an at-large bid like they did last season, but the Miners will not be an easy out with this conference tournament being at home. Southern Miss has had a succesful season and star forward Gary Flowers could provide a magical tournament for the Golden Eagles this week. However, if anyone is going to have an out-of-no-where run to the conference's automatic-bid like Houston did last year it has got to be Central Florida. The Golden Knights have the son of Michael Jordan, Marcus Jordan, and at one point were a Top 25 team poised for an NCAA Tournament bid. That all came crumbling down with 8 straight losses to open conference play. The Golden Knights have played better however as they have won 5 of their last 7 games and look to get back to their early season form this week in the Conference USA Tournament.

Mountain West Conference Tournament
March 8-12, 2011
Las Vegas, NV
Locks: San Diego State, Brigham Young and Nevada-Las Vegas
Bubble Teams: Colorado State and New Mexico
- It is quite amazing that three locks might have the biggest story lines in the conference tournament. Brigham Young is still fighting for a 1-seed and can grab one if they walk away winners, but at the same time they need to prove they can win consistently without suspended forward Brandon Davies. The Cougars kicked Davies off the team for violating the school's honor code and were hammered in their next game by New Mexico. They did win their final game of the regular season, but many people are anxious to see if Brigham Young can get back to their dominant form during the Mountain West Tournament. San Diego State meanwhile, despite its second loss of the season overall and to Brigham Young, continues to hover around a top 5 national ranking. With Brigham Young's rocky ending to their season, San Diego State will look to strike in Las Vegas and win the Mountain West Tournament for the second consecutive season. A tournament win most likely won't be enough to earn San Diego State a 1-seed, but a 2-seed would be locked up if the Aztecs can fend off Brigham Young to become tournament champions. Nevada-Las Vegas is back in the NCAA Tournament picture again, and after a season filled with some impressive early season wins the Rebels have a chance to play their conference tournament in-front of their home fans. The Rebels have been in the 7-seed to 10-seed the range the last few seasons and can work their way out of those tough seeds if they can reach the conference tournament final, or even win the whole thing at home in "Sin City." New Mexico, one of two bubble teams, has used their two wins over Brigham Young to quietly stick around NCAA Tournament talk. Even with 20 wins and a solid resume, two wins in the tournament which include a third win over Brigham Young would be enough to give the Lobos a real chance on Selection Sunday. The big question is, who does New Mexico play in their first conference tournament game? Well, the answer is fellow bubble team Colorado State. Even with a bad 1-4 stretch in their final 5 games, Colorado State can still slowly work their way back into NCAA Tournament discussion. A win over New Mexico in the first round would give them 20 wins, and a chance to boost their resume big time against Brigham Young. Only one of the two teams in the elimination-type game between Colorado State and New Mexico will remain on the bubble after Wednesday. What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas - but if either the Rams or the Lobos can make some noise in the conference tournament, the Mountain West might have four teams leave Las Vegas with NCAA Tournament bids.

Pacific-10 Conference Tournament
March 9-12, 2011
Los Angeles, CA
Locks: Arizona, and UCLA
Near Locks: Washington
Bubble Teams: Southern Cal and Washington State
- Quick, find a more bland power conference than the Pac-10? Yeah didn't think you'd find one that can go toe-to-toe with the extraordinarily unimpressive Pac-10. Last year the Pac-10 used a crazy Pac-10 Tournament run by Washington to break the 1-bid barrier and land two teams in the NCAA Tournament. This year may not be as bad, but it is still a conference that doesn't scare too many people. Arizona is the top team in the conference this year and will use the tournament to try and improve their NCAA Tournament seeding which currently stands at about a 5-seed. The Wildcats have had a very successful season led by future NBA-lottery pick Derrick Williams. However, the Wildcat's resume leaves a lot to be desired without any big time out of conference victories. Ben Howland has done a great job with UCLA this season as they were once below .500 at 3-4, but has gone 19-5 since that point in early December. The Bruins will have to avoid an early exit in Los Angeles so they don't slip into the dangerous 8-seed or 9-seed range. Washington lost 3 of their last 5 games, and while being in pretty safe NCAA Tournament territory right now, a loss in the first round of the Pac-10 Tournament to a desperate Washington State team will hurt them badly. Not only would it mean Washington will stumble backwards into the NCAA Tournament, it will make the Selection Committee give Washington's profile a closer look. Washington State needed late victories over Washington and Southern Cal to keep their NCAA Tournament, but their resume still really drags them down. Cougar guard Klay Thompson was suspended for marijuana, so a lot of what Washington State does in the Pac-10 Tournament will depend on whether or not he plays. Their resume can be described as "meek" and very bland, especially with their best win(s) being over RPI 47 Washington. That is why despite having a worse record, Southern Cal has the more impressive resume when considering potential NCAA Tournament teams. Early in the season the Trojans picked up victories over Texas and Tennessee to add some depth to their solid out of conference resume. If not for a big time late season surge, the Trojans may not even be in NCAA Tournament discussion. That means there is still a little more work for Southern Cal to do before getting strong considerations for the NCAA Tournament. If Southern Cal can reach the tournament final, the Selection Committee will have a hard time keeping them out of the NCAA Tournament.

Southeastern Conference Tournament
March 10-13, 2011
Atlanta, GA
Locks: Florida, Kentucky and Vanderbilt
Near Locks: Tennessee
Bubble Teams: Georgia and Alabama
- In the past few years the SEC Tournament has seen some lower seeds make some noise and wreak havoc. In a year with three teams fighting for NCAA Tournament bids, the same could happen yet again. Vanderbilt is the most boring team out of them all as the Commodores are NCAA Tournament locks, but can really only position themselves in the 6-seed to 8-seed line. The same goes for other locks in Kentucky and Florida who will battle it out for the top seed in the NCAA Tournament from the SEC. Neither really has a shot at a 1-seed, but if one of them performs well and walks away as conference tournament winners then they might reach as high as a 2-seed. Some consider Tennessee to be a bubble team, but that could be just to make television viewing of the SEC Tournament a little more appealing. At times Tennessee looked like superstars when they beat teams like Pittsburgh, but at the same time the Volunteers have lost three times to teams from mid-major conferences. While a loss in the first round to Arkansas won't knock Tennessee out of the first round, it might send some nervous tremors throughout Knoxville if a few mid-major teams steal bids during the next week. Georgia and Alabama, the two SEC bubble teams, were not seriously considered for NCAA Tournament bids back in the preseason. That being said, both teams now find themselves fighting for bids into the big dance. Georgia was a terrible team back in 2008 when they made a magical run through the SEC Tournament, won it and then almost won their first round game as 14-seed. Well, the Bulldogs can be assured that they don't need to do all of that to make the field of 68 this year. Georgia is an electrifying, high-flying team with a solid resume, but has blown multiple opportunities this season. The Bulldogs failed to close games out against teams like Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Florida and Notre Dame. If they had won one or two of those games, then the bubble and Georgia wouldn't even be in the same discussion. Unfortunately for them, they still have some work to do - getting out of the first round with a win over Auburn is a must, but a second round match up against Alabama would serve as a game where the Bulldogs could enter lock status with a win. The "experts" have varying opinions on Georgia, some say they are safe and in the 10-seed or 11-seed range, while others say as of right now the Bulldogs are out. Alabama and their young-gun head coach Anthony Grant have made great strides this season. This was expected, however not many people thought those strides would consist of a potential NCAA Tournament bid. The Crimson Tide were all but dead earlier in the season with a 6-6 record, but have won 14 of 18 since then to launch themselves into NCAA Tournament discussions. Alabama won the SEC West, which while not being an impressive task, is a good add on to their resume. If not for early season losses to Saint Peter's, Iowa and Seton Hall then this week may not mean so much to Alabama. The Crimson Tide get the winner of the Georgia vs Arkansas game for a chance to boost their resume. Unlike Georgia, with a weaker resume Alabama can't really afford to lost the second round game. One win should be enough, but a trip to the SEC Championship will all but guarantee Alabama's first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2006.
